My happy place is Block Island. I’ve been taking my kids on summer vacations there since they were small. I fell in love with my husband there and we got married there in 2009. The minute I stepped foot off the ferry for the first time, probably twenty years ago (for a wedding btw) I felt like I was at home. I’ve had more inspiring moments, more laughs, more sunsets, collected more sea glass and taken more ocean swims there than anywhere else. The BI is in my blood and when I become a best selling novelist (see above) I’m going to buy a house there and live happily ever after.
Technically my favorite is Sixteen Candles because it came out when I was a sophomore in high school (as was the lead character) and I could totally relate! (I may or may not have kissed the captain of the football team who was a senior that same year!) But more currently I love all Wes Anderson movies, not only for the beautiful visuals but for the sweet stories. Rushmore and Royal Tennenbaums are my two most favorite.
I can’t say that I have one favorite book, but if I had to choose one favorite book from the books that I have read this year, it would be All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr. This was such a beautifully written story with imagery that reminded me of the fleeting moments of motion, color and feeling that I strive to capture in my photographs.
Most recently, the photos from our wedding! I don't like being in front of the camera, but the photographers made it very easy and simple, we felt so comfortable that we formed a friendship with them. It sparked my interest and in photography, so I started taking photos of family and friends and it snowballed from there. Trying to capture the "real" moments during a wedding and being part of one of the most important days of a couple's life is awesome. I had such a wonderful experience with my photographers that I have always said I’d strive to do the same for my couples.
